چکیده

We study mixing and spreading in a very simple heterogeneous system: a numerical flow cell comprised of two homogeneous porous media separated by a sharp angled interface. The two media have identical porosity, but differing permeability and dispersivity characteristics representing a fine and a coarse medium. We focus on transport in advection-dominated systems as the primary role of the angled interface is to distort the velocity field. We demonstrate that the angle of the interface influences spreading in the system as observed by depth averaged breakthrough curves, but that the direction of flow does not appear to have a significant role on this. We also study evolution of mixing in the system as quantified by the dilution index. We demonstrate that when transverse dispersion is neglected global rates of mixing appear very similar for all considered interface angles, despite discernible differences in spreading. As a consequence this paper demonstrates that systems with quite different spreading characteristics can have similar mixing characteristics, and likewise systems with identical spreading characteristics can have quite different mixing. This work reinforces the limited applicability of using information from depth averaged breakthrough curves in assessing mixing and mixing driven phenomena. 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Numerical Investigation of Fluid Mixing in a Micro-Channel Mixer with Two Rotating Stirrers by Using the Incompressible SPH Method

Fluid mixing is a crucial and challenging process for microfluidic systems, which are widely used in biochemical processes. Because of their fast performance, active micromixers that use stirrer blades are considered for biological applications. In the present study, by using a robust and convenient Incompressible Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (ISPH) method, miscible mix...

Numerical investigation of thermal mixing of shear thinning fluids in one-way opposing jets

In recent years, impinging streams have received increasing interest for their high efficiency in heat and mass transfer. This numerical study was conducted to investigate flow and heat transfer characteristics of one-way opposing jets of non-Newtonian fluids. Effects of Reynolds number impinging angle, momentum ratio and flow behavior index on mixing index were evaluated. The results showed im...

A numerical investigation into the crack effects on the natural frequencies of the plates

In the current study, the effect of such parameters as the length, position and angle of crack on free vibrations of a cracked plate was examined by finite element method. The assumed crack was internal and through and its growth was ignored. In the proposed finite element model, crack was considered as a discontinuity on the plate surface and the results were compared with the results of other...

Numerical Study of Interaction of Two Plane Parallel Jets

In the present work, a numerical simulation of two parallel turbulent jets was performed. The simulations were carried out by using the  standard, the  standard and the RSM models. A parametric study was also presented to determine the effect of the nozzles spacing and velocity ratio on the axial and transverse positions of the merge and combined points. Correlations between the various paramet...

A numerical investigation of a reaction-diffusion equation arises from an ecological phenomenon

This paper deals with the numerical solution of a class of reaction diffusion equations arises from ecological phenomena. When two species are introduced into unoccupied habitat, they can spread across the environment as two travelling waves with the wave of the faster reproducer moving ahead of the slower. The mathematical modelling of invasions of species in more complex settings that include ...
